Das große Haus Selbst (The Big House Self)
Last chance to see Hamburg based artist Grit Richter’s splendid ideas on how to show something invisible. Yes, it is all about emotions and the inner processes of memory and thinking. With a huge tradition in her back (Expressionism, Surrealism, and f*k, painting in general) Grit shows great fearlessness by trusting the power of her intuition. In a rather slowly process her pieces emerges out of a stream of consciousness. „I’m not a conceptual artist“ she amphesized in an artist talk with art critic Jurriaan Benschop that she gave this week on the occasion of her recent solo exhibition at Galerie Tanja Wagner, Berlin.
Looking at her work you know what she means. Her work is everything but plain. Moreover one gets a feeling of how complex the architecture of The Big House Self is: multilayered and full of nooks and crannies. Especially her oil paintings achieves a dissolution of space and a kind of pull that pins you down in front of them. Using a brownish varnish as subfont Grit applies a bright range of colors in different techniques, what gives them an appeal of painted collages. Their compositions are constantly osccillating between figuration and abstraction, not telling a certain story nor giving a specific reference to something. Some painting make you think of a friendly ghost another of a picture postcard you once received from Los Angeles, some shows the disturbing atmosphere of a feverish dream, some are quite and peaceful. All together they are just adorable.
And the exhibition offers so much more! You can also loose your heart to some small yet powerful concrete objects, a sculpture made out of sticks and textile, and the core piece of it all: a wall painting that rules the second room.
There is no other way for us than to give some love to Grit and her Big House Self. But you have to hurry up if you want to get entrance to it: this post is captioned with „Last dance, last chance“ and the exhibitions runs until tomorrow, sorry ‘bout it.
