Kamasi Washington – The Epic

Intergalactic Planetary Planetary Intergalactic

and so it is, Kamasi Washington´s triple album the Epic is truly intergalactic, period ! The gifted musician and sonic explorer, his 32 piece band and 20 strong choir take us on a voyage and they boldly go where no one has gone before. It´s been quite a while since a jazz record had such an impact on me and I don´t know what caught me first, the virtuosity, the composition, the arrangement, the boldness, or the joy of playing and creating music that runs like a thread through the whole album.  When I first heard Change of the guard

I was stunned, it reminded me of Marvin Gaye´sWhats going on  in the way strings and choir are arranged and that ain´t half bad, as What´s going on is in my top five of all time for sure. Anyhow, this opened me up and through all the density and pulsating force  suddenly it was clear to me that Kamasi was really up for a change of the guard. Remember we´re talking jazz here and not of the „easy-listening“ type!

So after diving into the absolutely breathtaking second track Askim

thats starts on a bass, picks up speed and then soon takes the listener to dizzy new heights.  I was in for a little break, as the music had really taken me on a trip and I had to get my feet back on solid ground !  Meanwhile  I did some research and found out that Mr. Washington only recently blew his horn on Kendrick´s –To pimp a butterfly and Flylo´s You´re dead  and he also served as a sideman for Raphael Saadiq, Chaka Khan and Lauryn Hill just to name a few and then I came across this absolutely mind-blowing live performance from the good people over at NPR

Kamasi Washington’s ‘The Epic’ In Concert

You absolutely need to watch it and I promise it won´t take long until you see, hear and feel the joy and the spirit of the entire band !

I could keep on goin´on ranting and raving about the Epic as it is versatile, mind bending, soulful Yin and Yang shit, but you should rather go out and see Kamasi and band live, they´ll be touring the US and Europe until late November.

Plus you should absolutely buy the Epic on Vinyl as this is the only way to go!  It will be out Mid August !

Meanwhile be well
